For Teachers

Real Math. Real Science. Real Michigan.

WaterED helps you meet Common Core standards through applied, place-based learning that students actually remember.

Our philosophy

Why Applied Learning?

We built WaterED because we kept asking the same question our students ask: do people actually use this math in real life? The answer is yes — and we wanted to prove it.

Applied learning is learning that sticks. When students use ratios to measure a real coastline, or apply logarithms to analyze fractal geometry in nature, the math stops being abstract and starts being meaningful.

We know teachers are busy and accountable to the standards. Every activity on WaterED is mapped to Common Core requirements — so you're not choosing between rigor and relevance. You get both.

Do people actually use this math in real life?

— The question WaterED was built to answer.

20%

of the world's surface fresh water

is held in the Great Lakes — right here in Michigan.

Place-based learning

Why Water? Why Michigan?

We started in Michigan, at the heart of the Great Lakes — the largest system of freshwater on Earth, holding more than 20% of the world's surface fresh water. This isn't a distant issue. It's in our backyard.

Water is a subject that connects every discipline: math, science, geography, policy, and careers. It's also a resource that every student will have a stake in protecting. Understanding it is the first step.

What we believe

Built on Four Principles

Science Literacy First

Our goal is to develop scientifically literate learners — students who can read data, ask good questions, and think critically about the world around them.

Standards-Aligned by Design

Every worksheet, quiz, and case study is built around specific Common Core and Michigan science standards. Curriculum alignment details are listed on every resource.

Curiosity Leads to Action

An engaged learner becomes a passionate one. The more students understand about the Great Lakes, the more they want to protect them. Knowledge is the foundation of stewardship.

Careers Make It Real

We feature scientists, engineers, and conservationists who have built careers around Michigan's water. Seeing real people doing real work answers the question: yes, people use this.
